Simplicity 8451: DIY Camel Wool Double Breasted Coat

Simplicity 8451 double breasted wool coat

Hey Everyone,

Hope you are all doing fine. I have a bit of a backlog of things which I want to share before the end of the year so let’s just skip to the good bit, shall we?

We went down to London last month and I decided I wanted to make a new coat before we went. I wanted something not too heavy weight, and something that reflects my new found loves of neutral colours and midi lengths. Time was of the essence, so I decided to use a pattern I have made before: simplicity 8451, which you can see here, and pulled out a length of fine wool twill melton that I have had in my stash for almost two years, and originally purchased from Fabworks.

With some intense sewing I managed to get my coat finished before we went and am very happy with the end result. The wool is soft and, combined with the lining, surprisingly warm. It’s a classic that I love!

Pattern Alterations

Please check my original post (see link above) on this pattern for initial alterations. On this version, I also did the following:

  • 0.5 forward shoulder adjustment
  • Lengthened coat by 7.5 inches
  • Added a back vent
  • I added a centre back seam to the back lining and omitted the pleat
  • I did have to cut my upper collar on the cross grain due to fabric limitations. I checked my fabric first to ensure there wasn’t going to be any issues with nap .

You tried coat making yet? Coats are one of my favourite things to sew.

See you soon!

By day I work in the exciting world of pharmaceutical regulatory affairs, registering medicines (!), but by night I turn in to a sewing diva, making all manner of clothes in my beautiful sewing space (which you can tour using the link at the top of this blog). I love how sewing and sewing clothes that fit my curvy body continually challenges me. I enjoy working with all different types of fabric, and whilst I don't like to put restrictions on myself and say I won't buy RTW, the truth is that I probably rarely do buy it, preferring the fit of my own me-made clothes. I love to use natural fibres where ever possible and colourful coats are an obsession of mine! Sewing is both my addiction and my therapy. You can contact me at

  1. Well done!
I am trying to copy a favourite coat that has been loved to death. I have several coat patterns and as such guidance on how to assemble it. Here’s to hoping that the muslin will be wearable. All outer pieces have been cut, now onto copying the lining!

  2. Such a classic! Well done! I loved the pink one but if it was me I’d be too shy to wear it!! So yes, I love this classic version.

  3. This coat fits you so well! It is indeed a classic, and should get a lot of wear. Congratulations on succeeding at something so many of us are intimidated by!

  4. LOVE love this project and your style in general. Wondering—where are your black boots from in the first pic. They are just incredible!!
