Hey Everyone,
Today I am sharing a jacket that I made before I went on holiday back in July. At the time, I figured a lightweight jacket like this was missing from my wardrobe. Not something waterproof, but just a light layer to throw on over clothes during the cooler days of our summer. Turns out, when we went on holiday there was a heat wave, and I had zero need to make this jacket for the holiday, although it has been worn a couple of times since then, and I am sure it will get worn. It’s a useful piece to throw on over jeans in particular.
The pattern is Simplicity 2153, which I am sure is now out of print. But it still seems to be readily available from the usual places (eBay, Etsy etc). As designed, it is unlined, but I added a half lining because I find it easier to get in and out of jackets if there is a slippery lining, at least for the sleeves.
Pattern Alterations
- My jacket is view C, but with the collar from view A
- I cut a size 20 through the bust, arms and shoulders, and graded out over the waist and hips
- I omitted the breast pockets
- I added cuffs with a sleeve tab/ snap detail, borrowed from my Simplicity 9052 anorak
- I added a half lining
- I added 3.25 inches length to the jacket body
- I removed 7.5 inches of length from the sleeves. I think I might add a couple of inches back to the length if I make this again
- I narrowed my sleeves a little to match the cuffs
- I lowered the pockets by 2 inches
- The pattern has you use bias tape to create the casing, but I used some matching ribbon that I had in my stash
Fabrics and notions
- Cotton twill outer fabric and viscose (?) lining both from Fabworks
- Zipper from Jaycotts
- Drawstring and gold toggles from Neotrims
- Gold eyelets from by the brand Hemline
- Snaps: from my stash
Finally caught up with pre-holiday makes! I have an unseasonal linen dress to share next I think, but after that, it is full on autumnal sewing!
See you soon.
You look very nice in it! I am sure you will get much use out of it, even though you didn’t need it for your trip. My grandmother used to say, “Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.”
Thanks Mindy
Great jacket!
That’s missing from my wardrobe, too…
🙂 Chris
Thanks Chris
Lovely summer jacket. It looks great on you with a very nice fit. I like the half lining….an idea I intend to copy!
Thanks Jane
